How strong Business English strengthens your Career Prospects

Teaching English - Talking Business. Every Monday, Wednesday & Friday.

Welcome to Motivational Monday.

In today’s newsletter, I want to discuss the importance of Business English in the workplace. Competition takes many forms in our lives. We are competing with others to land our dream job or to close an important contract. English is one way that you can stand out from your competitors.

Three Reasons How Business English Boosts Your Career

1) Increased Interview Success. You only have to imagine two identical candidates at a job interview but with one important difference - skills in Business English. Which one is more likely to get the job? Nowadays, many jobs require a good command of English even to get to the interview stage.

2) Improved Chances for Promotion. In many roles, Business English becomes increasingly important the higher up the career ladder you progress. For those dreaming of reaching executive level, I would argue that Advanced (C1) or Proficiency (C2) level English is an absolute minimum in many companies.

3) Building a Global Network. Today's business landscape is increasingly international. Business English fluency allows you to network effectively with foreign colleagues and clients, opening doors to new markets and opportunities.

Investing in Yourself - A good ROI?

Improving your Business English requires two resources - time and money (while you can use free resources you probably need more time). The important thing to consider is your ROI (Return on Investment). This is the benefit you receive from the investment that you make and it does not have to be purely financial (see below).

There are numerous resources available to strengthen your Business English:

  • Professional courses: Business English courses designed specifically for executives provide targeted training on writing, presentation, and negotiation skills.

  • Online resources: Numerous online platforms offer business English learning materials, including interactive exercises and grammar lessons.

  • Mentorship: Seek guidance from a business professional known for their communication skills.

  • Practice makes perfect: Network with colleagues, participate in industry events and volunteer for public speaking opportunities to hone your skills.

Conclusion:

By investing in strong business English, you're not just improving your communication; you're making a strategic investment in your executive career. Sharper communication skills translate to a more compelling job application, a more confident interview performance, and ultimately, faster career progression.

When is the best time to take action? Certainly not a week before your interview like some students think. Take action today! Explore the resources mentioned above and develop a plan to strengthen your Business English. Remember, a powerful communicator is a powerful leader.

Word of the Day - Return on Investment (ROI)

Return - noun - the profit that you get from an investment

“My portfolio gave a return of 20% last year means that the portfolio was 20% higher at the end of the year than it was at the beginning.”

Investment - noun - the act of putting money, effort or time into something with the hope of making a profit or getting an advantage.

“Buying Apple shares was a great investment.”

Return on Investment (ROI) - noun - ROI is a ratio, usually expressed as a percentage, that measures the profitability of an investment relative to the original cost of the investment. ROI can be negative if the investment made a loss.

ROI = (Profit or loss/Cost of Investment) * 100
